€1,400 million of PV heads to the desert climate of Chile



The Spanish company Ingenostrum has launched a project to build six photovoltaic plants in the Chilean region of Antofagasta. The initiative involves the commissioning of 690 MW of photovoltaic capacity with a planned investment of $1,800 million, approximately €1,400 million.



The region of Antofagasta is located in the Atacama Desert in northern Chile. To the west, lies the Pacific Ocean, and to the east, Argentina. The entire territory is characterised by a desert climate in all its varieties. This is the place chosen for implementing six photovoltaic plants with a combined capacity of 690 MW.



The idea was developed by Ingenostrum and now lies in the hands of the Environmental Assessment Service (Servicio de Evaluación Ambiental), a Chilean government agency that is charged with assessing the feasibility of the project. Its final ruling will be known within three months. The project developers are confident that the projects will be approved. In fact, work contracts indicate that construction of the first plant will begin at the end of 2012, while the six plants should be operational in 2016, says Santiago Rodríguez, Ingenostrum's Director of Strategic Planning.



It is envisaged that construction will take four years due to the complexity of the project because of the plants' location. "We have to set up camp and establish all the necessary logistics, including food and water," explains Santiago Rodríguez. From north to south, the plants will be: Crucero East and West, Laberinto East and West, and Domeyko East and Domeyko 2.
